Budget Spotlights 2025 #7: Recreation and Culture, Community and Economic Development

In this week’s Budget Spotlight, we are diving into the Recreation and Culture and Community and Economic Development departments in the Municipality!

RECREATION AND CULTURE

The Mississippi Mills Recreation and Culture Department strives to maintain a superb quality of life for our residents. The department is responsible for:

  • Overseeing more than 20 parks throughout the entire Municipality

  • Coordinating sports and leisure activities for seniors, adults and youth

  • Managing sports and cultural facilities including community centres, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, splash pad, skate parks, playgrounds and Almonte Old Town Hall

  • Coordinating a variety of community events, including Canada Day celebrations, Light Up the Night and Santa Claus parades

  • Supporting local community organizations with promotion, equipment and guidance

  • Managing tourism for the Municipality

2025 PROPOSED CAPITAL PROJECTS – RECREATION AND CULTURE

Proposed capital projects (subject to change) in the draft 2025 budget for Recreation and Culture, include:

  • $110,000 – John Levi Community Centre arena condenser replacement

  • $80,000 – John Levi Community Centre upper hall air handling unit replacements

  • $70,000 – John Levi Community Centre concrete and asphalt repairs

  • $58,000 – compressor replacement at Stewart Community Centre

  • $30,000 – Gemmill Park track grading/stone replacement

  • $15,000 – John Levi Community Centre exterior door and frame replacement

  • $10,000 – Ice resurfacer overhaul maintenance (Pakenham)

  • $10,000 – Accessible door at Almonte Lawn Bowling Clubhouse and stone for parking lot

  • $10,000 – Trailer for recreation equipment replacement

  • $10,000 – Repair work/signage at Clayton Taylor Park

  • $10,000 – New tables for Stewart Community Centre upper hall

  • $10,000 – John Levi Community Centre emergency exit canopy

  • $8,000 – Garbage can replacement at municipal parks

  • $8,000 – Gemmill Park basketball court lining

  • $8,000 – Gemmill Park electrical panel replacement

  • $8,000 – Gemmill Park outdoor volleyball court nets and sand

COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Community and Economic Development works in partnership with the Recreation and Culture to develop and maintain Mississippi Mills as an attractive place for residents to live, work and play.

Community and Economic Development’s role is to deliver programs, policies and activities to support the economic well-being of the community. This includes:

  • Developing and maintaining community sense of place

  • Supporting and planning community events

  • Embracing diversity and inclusion

  • Promoting tourism

  • Supporting community development

  • Encouraging sustainability

  • Attracting investments

  • Business retention initiatives

  • Supporting entrepreneurship and job creation

2025 PROPOSED CAPITAL PROJECTS – COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Proposed capital projects (subject to change) in the draft 2025 budget for Community and Economic Development, include:

  • $80,000 – Funding toward Economic Development Strategic Plan actions and strategies to come from the plan being presented first quarter of 2025 (50% to come from grant funding)

  • $20,000 – Phase 2 of Abattoir Feasibility Study (dependent on funding application)

  • $20,000 – Accessible ramp and lift for Almonte Old Town Hall and Gemmill Park stages (dependent on grant application)

  • $18,000 – Community event equipment (outdoor chairs, event tables, pop-up tents, barricades)

  • $15,000 – Engineering for anchors for Gemmill Park stage cover

  • $10,000 – Design and upgrades to accessible viewing platform in Gemmill Park

  • $7,000 – Stair/ramp design for Almonte Old Town Hall to Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail

  • $6,000 – Benches along Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail (Rural)

  • $6,000 – Cleaning and refurbishment of Gemmill Park stage cover

  • $6,000 – Service club entrance signage refurbishment

  • $4,000 – Refurbishment and replacement of murals (ongoing)
