38 Main Street East Update - July 19, 2024
Since the last public update on June 17, 2024, the Municipality’s Chief Building Official has received additional submissions from the Owner’s engineer and has deemed them sufficient to satisfy the second milestone of the May 6, 2024 Unsafe Order.
The Owner submitted an application for a demolition permit for partial demolition of the belltower to remove areas declared unsafe by the engineering report. The CBO issued the demolition permit on July 18, 2024. It should be noted that as this work is to remediate unsafe conditions, it is exempt from the requirements of heritage approval.
The work will involve removing both the exterior walls of the belltower and the upper portion of the gable end facing Union Street. There will be temporary hoarding to enclose the end of the building for the winter. The Owner will be required to apply for another permit to permanently re-enclose the end of the building in 2025. This permanent work will be subject to heritage approval.
During this work, there will be minor adjustments to the existing concrete barriers, but the current traffic pattern will remain as is during this time. There are no power disruptions expected at this time. It is anticipated that the road will be fully reopened by December 1, 2024.
Regarding occupancy of the building, the two apartments on the east end of the building remain safe to occupy, however the other areas of the building remain unsafe until remediation is completed.
More updates will be provided as they become available.
