38 Main Street East Update - October 25, 2024
Work to stabilize the building at 38 Main Street East began last week and is anticipated to take approximately eight weeks for completion. The Municipality’s Chief Building Official (CBO) exercised his authority to take over control of the project last week, to stabilize the building, eliminate the public safety hazard and reopen the road.
The work, to be carried out by engineering firm CEL, includes the removal of the tower and upper portion of the Union St gable and associated repairs to the front of the building facing Union Street. This is only the minimal amount of work necessary to stabilize the building and eliminate the public safety hazard and as such, does not include renovations to the two units vacated or using materials that reflect the heritage value of the building.
Regarding the cost of this work, concerns have been raised in public discussions referencing a cost of $4 million to $5 million. The total cost cannot be determined at this time; however, please note that this figure is inaccurate, and the Municipality can confirm that the amount will be significantly lower than the rumoured amounts circulating in the public.
As stated in the previous update to the public, costs associated with all these works will be invoiced back to the property owner. The Municipality does have a few different tools to collect the costs from the property owner.
