Cooling Centers Open in Municipality during Heat Warning

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the region, in effect Tuesday, July 4 to Thursday, July 6.

Maximum temperatures are expected to reach low 30s, but with the Humidex it could feel more like low 40s.  

The Municipality of Mississippi Mills reminds residents who need to escape the heat that our facilities are open during business hours to cool down:

  • John Levi Community Centre (Almonte) – Monday to Friday: 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Stewart Community Centre (Pakenham) – Monday to Friday: 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Almonte Branch of Mississippi Mills Public Library – Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Pakenham Branch of Mississippi Mills Public Library – Monday: Closed; Tuesday and Thursday: 2 to 7 p.m.; Wednesday: 1 to 5 p.m.; Friday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Sunday: Closed.

Extreme heat risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses or those working outdoors.

Signs of heat illness include: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Drink plenty of water, seek out cool spaces and never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
