Council Proclaims May 26 to June 1, 2024 as National AccessAbility Week
Mississippi Mills Council officially proclaimed May 26 to June 1, 2024 as National AccessAbility Week at their May 7 Council meeting.
Council also declared Wednesday, May 29, 2024 as Red Shirt Day. Almonte Old Town Hall and the falls will be lit in red to recognize the day.
The full proclamation is as follows:
WHEREAS, National AccessAbility Week is taking place from May 26 to June 3, 2024 this year; and
WHEREAS, National AccessAbility Week is an opportunity to celebrate the valuable contributions of Canadians with disabilities and to recognize the efforts of individuals, communities, and workplaces that are actively working to remove barriers to accessibility and inclusion; and
WHEREAS, over 15 percent of Ontarians live with some form of a disability as a result there is a need for greater awareness, enhanced service delivery, and opportunities for persons with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Individuals with disabilities are impacted daily by barriers to: information, facilities, employment, transportation, and communication supports, therefore negatively challenging an individual’s ability to fully participate in community life; and
WHEREAS, accessibility and inclusion are essential for ensuring that all community members have equity in opportunities, and the ability to fully participate in community life; and
WHEREAS, Red Shirt Day is a day for people across the country to come together and wear red to create a display of solidarity for people and families living with disabilities;
THEREFORE , BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Corporation of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills proclaims May 26 to June 3, 2024, as “National AccessAbility Week” and Wednesday, May 29th as “Red Shirt Day” and encourages everyone to support equality of access and opportunity for persons with disabilities.
