Council Proclaims May as Museum Month in Mississippi Mills

At last night’s Council meeting, Council officially proclaimed May as Museum Month in Mississippi Mills.

Mississippi Mills is fortunate to have three museums in our own backyard:

  • North Lanark Regional Museum – Dedicated to collecting, preserving and displaying the history and culture of Mississippi Mills. https://www.northlanarkregionalmuseum.com/ 

  • Mill of Kintail Museum – Located in the historic grist mill in the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area, learn about local historical figures, Dr. James Naismith and Dr. Robert Tait McKenzie. https://mvc.on.ca/museum/ 

  • Mississippi Valley Textile Museum – Housed in the annex of the former Rosamond Woolen Company, explore the history of the textile industry. https://mvtm.ca/ 

The full proclamation is as follows:

WHEREAS the 700+ museums, art galleries, and heritage sites, and the over 8,000 museum workers and 16,000 volunteers contribute to Ontario’s $26 billion cultural sector;

AND WHEREAS museums, as trusted local organizations, create healthy and connected communities, and by ensuring all Ontarians have access to culture and heritage, inspire lifelong learning;

AND WHEREAS museums promote growth and build local economies by welcoming tourists in every community across the province;

AND WHEREAS this month provides an opportunity to raise awareness for the vital role museums, museum workers and volunteers have in their communities and celebrate their contributions to community wellbeing, tourism, education, and learning;

AND WHEREAS May 18th, 2024 is International Museum Day to highlight museums as centres of education, innovation and cultural understanding in our communities,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Municipality of Mississippi Mills, do hereby proclaim May 2024 as “May is Museum Month” in Mississippi Mills, and encourage all residents and tourists to visit our local museums in May.
