Declaration of Significant Weather Event – March 28, 2025

As per Regulation 239/02 of the Municipal Act, 2001, and due to the significant snowfall and freezing rain forecasted for this weekend, the Municipality of Mississippi Mills has declared a significant weather event for Friday, March 28, effective at 5 p.m.

This declaration suspends the standard timelines required for Mississippi Mills to meet winter maintenance measures until the Municipality declares the significant weather event has ended. It may take longer than usual to bring the condition of the roads back to a state of repair.

The Municipality of Mississippi Mills may declare a significant weather event when the weather forecast or conditions include one or more of the following conditions:

  • Significant snow accumulation during a 24-hour period
  • Ice formation occurring with no warning from the weather forecast
  • High winds leading to large snow drifts
  • Cold temperatures when de-icing operations will not be effective

The declaration will remain in place until the event clears. Our Roads and Public Works Department advises residents to:

  • Stay off the roads if possible
  • Be cautious around snow removal equipment
  • Be prepared for power outages and tree damage
  • Make sure you have a 72-hour emergency kit ready

Flood watch

The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) also issued a flood watch for the watershed on March 27.

Because water levels and flows are high across the Mississippi Valley watershed, flooding in low-lying areas and those with poor drainage is possible. Widespread flooding is not expected.

Sandbags

Although flooding issues aren’t expected, the Municipality makes sand and bags available to residents at risk of flooding at the Ramsay Public Works Garage (3131 Old Perth Road). This is at no charge and is currently by request only.

How to make a request:

  • Call our Roads and Public Works Department at 613-256-2064.
  • If there is no answer, leave a message with your phone number, address and number of bags needed.
  • Residents are responsible for bringing their own shovel to fill bags as well as transporting them.
