Every Child Matters Flag Raising
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30th, 2022 marks the second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On this day we honour the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. It’s an opportunity for all of us to recognize and commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools and those who have been, are being, and will continue to be impacted.
At our August 23rd meeting, Mississippi Mills Council once again supported flying the Every Child Matters Flag at municipal facilities for the month of September to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
We can all take steps to raise understanding about residential schools and their ongoing effect on Indigenous Peoples. Part of making change is committing to being uncomfortable, to learning and challenging what we think we know.
I encourage residents to visit the Mississippi Mils All My Relations website for a wealth of information and resources, including materials about Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. All My Relations is a group of community members whose mission is to respond to the calls to action outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in a respectful, concrete and doable way. I want to thank them wholeheartedly for their continued leadership in this important and sensitive work.
There is support available for former residential school students and those affected. The National Crisis Line offers emotional and crisis referral services. For more information, call 1-866-925-4419.
Sincerely,
