From the Office of the Mayor – In Memory of Former Mayor Al Lunney
September 28, 2024
It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of former Mississippi Mills Mayor and Lanark County Warden Al Lunney, this week. On behalf of Mississippi Mills Council and staff, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Al’s family.
Born on a farm in Pakenham, Al had Mississippi Mills in his blood. Following a long career with Ottawa Hydro, he embarked on a career in local politics, serving as Mayor of our Municipality for two terms, from 2003 to 2010. During this time, he also served as Lanark County Warden in 2007.
Known for his tremendous sense of humour and deep love for community, under Al’s leadership, a strong focus of Council was strategic planning for the future growth of the Municipality. His vision paved the way for infrastructure projects such as the current Mississippi Mills Wastewater Treatment Plant, and cemented Al’s political legacy.
As a community leader, he also volunteered with many local organizations but held a special place in his heart for the Almonte General Hospital Fairview Manor Board of which he served as Chair.
As a former member of Council, flags at all municipal buildings have been lowered in Al’s honour. I ask that you hold his friends and the Lunney family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Mayor Christa Lowry
Municipality of Mississippi Mills
