In Memory of Margaret Duncan

Margaret Duncan

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE MAYOR:

It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of Former Reeve of Ramsay, Margaret Duncan. Margaret passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 24th surrounded by family.

Margaret Duncan was a trailblazer. Her 19-year political career began in 1975 when she was the first woman to be elected to Ramsay Township Council.  From 1988 to 1994 she was the first woman to serve as Ramsay’s Reeve and in 1994, Margaret was the first woman elected Warden of Lanark County.

Through her service on Ramsay Council, Margaret was responsible for securing significant funding for the Linn Bower Seniors Housing in Clayton as well as major infrastructure improvements throughout the Township. Under her leadership, the construction of the new Ramsay Municipal Office (current Mississippi Mills Municipal Office), and the initiation of the Ramsay Community Official Plan were undertaken.

Margaret remained an active community contributor and strong politico to the end, participating in the federal election campaign as recently as fall 2021. Unwaveringly, she always chose to get involved by giving her time and talents, enriching both the community and the people she served so proudly.

As a former Head of Council, flags at all municipal buildings have been lowered in Margaret’s honour.  Please keep the Duncan family in your thoughts and prayers during this solemn time.

Mayor of Mississippi Mills
