Municipal Canada Day Fireworks Shows to Proceed as Planned

The Municipality of Mississippi Mills’ Canada Day fireworks will proceed as planned on June 30th and July 1st.

Pakenham hosts its Canada Day Eve celebrations on June 30th, capped off by fireworks at the Stewart Community Centre, and on July 1, Almonte’s festivities in Gemmill Park will finish with a fireworks display at dusk.

“The Municipality is taking precautions to ensure safety in operating our fireworks displays,” said Mississippi Mills Director of Protective Services/Fire Chief, Mike Williams. “Our shows are operated by trained professionals who use only commercial fireworks, which are fully inspected by the Mississippi Mills Fire Department and our staff and volunteers will be standing by, ready in the event any unplanned issues occur.”

A Level 5 Total Burn Ban remains in place in the Municipality, which is also under a Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ) order from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.  The Ministry tracks the threat of forest fires and provides a forest fire info map on its website.  With the recent rains the threat is low but the threat status changes daily with weather conditions. The RFZ suspends all issued burn permits in the Municipality while the order is in effect. Fireworks are not included under the RFZ, however residents are advised to refrain from having personal fireworks. Instead, the Municipality encourages the public to attend one or both of the Municipal fireworks displays.

Those who choose to set off fireworks resulting in a fire are subject to fines of up to $25,000, jail time and bear the financial responsibility for any costs incurred in fighting the fire.

There is plenty to celebrate this Canada Day as the Municipality marks our Bicentennial. First up is Canada Day Eve in Pakenham on June 30, beginning at 5 p.m., featuring a barbecue, Canada Day Parade at 7 p.m., face painting and games, as well as live music. On July 1, festivities get underway at 1:30 p.m. in Almonte’s Gemmill Park, including a kids’ zone, live music (headlined by Juno Award winners, Monkey Junk), Almonte Royal Canadian Legion Branch 240 Barbecue and more.
