Remembrance Day in Mississippi Mills

Remembrance Day celebrations have played a major role in Canada since 1931. Every year, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Canadians gather to stand in honour of all who have fallen.

This year’s Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Campaign kicked off on Friday, October 27. To mark the campaign’s launch, President of Almonte Legion Branch 240, Rob Madore, pinned the first poppy on Deputy Mayor Rickey Minnille.

Over the next two weeks leading up to Remembrance Day, look for poppy boxes at the Municipal Office, as well as local businesses. All donations directly support veterans and their families and help ensure Canadians never forget their sacrifices.

Remembrance Day Ceremony Information

There will be three opportunities to pay tribute to veterans at Remembrance Day ceremonies in Mississippi Mills:

• CLAYTON – Sunday, November 4 at 10:45 a.m. at the Clayton Cenotaph. Organized by Almonte Legion Branch 240, veterans will march from Clayton Hall to the Cenotaph (across from Clayton General Store – 2862 Tatlock Road). The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and will include the laying of wreaths. 

• ALMONTE – Saturday, November 11 at 10:45 a.m. at the Almonte Cenotaph. Organized by Almonte Legion Branch 240, a parade will form at the Legion on Bridge Street, to march to the Cenotaph next to Almonte Old Town Hall. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and will include a wreath laying service. Refreshments and a light lunch will be served at the legion following the ceremony.

• PAKENHAM – Saturday, November 11 at 10:45 a.m. at the Cenotaph in front of Pakenham Public School. This annual ceremony, coordinated by Pakenham Public School includes a wreath laying ceremony. Military representatives and the Legion Colour Party will be in attendance. A light lunch will be served afterward at the school.

The Royal Canadian Legion encourages all Canadians to wear a poppy and observe a moment of silence on November 11, to mark the sacrifices of the many who have fallen in the service of their country, and to acknowledge the courage of those who still serve.
