Sunday, September 8 is Firefighters’ National Memorial Day
The second Sunday in September was the commemoration date of Firefighters’ National Memorial Day established by the Parliament of Canada in 2017. Canadian flags at all federal buildings are flown at half-mast on this day. Flags have been lowered at the following municipal facilities in Mississippi Mills honouring those who have fallen in the line of duty:
-
Mississippi Mills Municipal Office
-
Mississippi Mills Fire Department – Station 1 in Almonte
-
Almonte Old Town Hall
-
John Levi Community Centre
-
Ontario Clean Water Agency
This is also a day to recognize firefighters in our own community and across Canada for their courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to serve their communities. We also recognize the sacrifice, dedication, and support of their families.
The bronze statue pictured stands at the Canadian Firefighters' Memorial in Ottawa at the corner of Wellington and Lett Street in LeBreton Flats.
The Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation was formed to honour, remember and support Canada's fallen firefighters and their families. We will never forget.
