What is a Commissioner of Oaths?
A Commissioner of Oaths is someone who is registered in Ontario for taking affidavits or declarations by asking the applicant to swear or affirm that the information in the document is true and correct.
When do you need a Commissioner of Oaths?
Commissioner of Oaths services are offered for legal documents such as affidavits, oaths, statutory declarations, transferring ownership of a used vehicle, gifting a used vehicle to a member of your family, or applying for a municipal licence or zoning variance to name a few.
* Please note that not all documents can be commissioned at the municipality, these include, but are not limited to, wills, powers of attorney, divorce, separation, custody documents, debt, real estate, estate settlement, court, legal, statement of arrears, or certified true copies. The Municipality does not have a Notary Public and cannot notarize documents.
How do I schedule an appointment with a Commissioner of Oaths?
Please contact the Clerk's Office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, to arrange a time for signing your documents. As per the fees and charges bylaw, there will be a fee when signing, payable by cash, cheque, or debit.
What is required to have a document commissioned?
Applicants must provide all copies of the documents they wish to have commissioned and arrive at the Municipal Office in person. The request for Commissioner of Oaths service must be made by the same individual taking the oath and signing the document. Individuals signing the document must present a valid piece of government photo identification (i.e. a valid driver's licence or passport), no photocopies will be accepted.
* Document(s) to be commissioned must be signed in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths.
