When purchasing a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm online or in-store, check for a recognized Canadian certification mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL, which should appear directly on the product (not just the packaging).

Ask the seller to confirm that the product meets Canadian standards. If they cannot provide that information or you feel unsure, don’t take the risk. Learn more about purchasing smoke or carbon monoxide alarms online here

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Carbon Monoxide Alarms are required in all homes that use fossil fuels or have an attached garage. Carbon monoxide alarms are required outside sleeping areas in residential homes when required. Since carbon monoxide is odorless, it isn't always apparent when you're inhaling dangerous amounts. Fatigue, headaches, and flu-like symptoms are some effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. Alarms placed close to the bedroom will ensure occupants receive early notification and avoid the effects of carbon monoxide. Multi-residential buildings equipped with service (boiler) rooms require alarms in the service room and in all residential units that share a direct partition (walls, floor and ceiling) with the service room.  Any residential units that share a partition with an indoor garage (including underground parking) will also require carbon monoxide alarms. Questions regarding alarms may be directed to the Fire Department Administration by calling 613-256-2064 ext. 704 or by email: fireprevention@mississippimills.ca

Smoke Alarms

All residential homes are required to have working smoke alarms on every storey of their home and outside all sleeping areas. Newer homes may have strobe lights and additional alarms in the bedrooms.  The Fire Code requires alarms to be maintained and in working order. Only working alarms can save lives! Here are a few safety tips:

• Removal of alarms and alarms that are not operational is an offence.

• Never replace hard-wired alarms with battery powered replacements. This will reduce the level of safety in your home and may delay early notification of a fire in other areas of your home. It is also a violation to reduce the level of alarm protection in your home!

• Replace alarms after 10 years. Most alarms are equipped with a date stamp and end of life signal. Beeping alarms may indicate the end of life and alarms that do not have a date stamp are likely older than 10 years.

• Landlords are responsible for alarms and are recommended to keep a written log to confirm alarm installation and maintenance. Tenants are responsible to notify landlords of defective alarms and are recommended to put the notification in writing. 

The Mississippi Mills Fire Prevention Division meets the day-to-day challenges of providing fire safety inspection services, building plan reviews, building retrofit, fire code compliance and complaint inspections across the municipality.

Fire Prevention Inspectors are committed to ensuring the safety of the public as their primary focus and reducing the potential of fire in the built environment. The work carried out by our fire inspection staff is vital in ensuring compliance with the Ontario Fire Codes and Ontario Building.

Compliance Letters

A compliance letter advises if a property complies with regulations in the Fire Code. A fee of $65.00 plus HST applies and payment must be received before the fire department will begin processing the request.

Note: Compliance is determined as of date of last inspection (if one has occurred). It does not necessarily speak to current condition. If current condition compliance is required, you should request inspection (see Inspection section below). In addition, this letter only speaks to compliance with Fire Code, not Building Services permits, zoning, etc. For other file search options, please contact the Building & Planning Department

Fire Reports

The fire department generates reports and documents when providing emergency response or attends properties to assess code compliance.  Anyone may request information from the Municipality. The Municipality makes every effort to provide information without the need to make a formal request under MFIPPA. However, when an individual requests information about another person, or the information contains details regarding a third party, a formal request is necessary.

The Mississippi Mills Fire Department are reminding residents and motorists that vehicles with green flashing lights are being driven by volunteer firefighters who are responding to an emergency. We are requesting drivers to please yield the right of way to these vehicles as a courtesy. This may mean pulling over when safe to do so, and allow the emergency responder’s personal vehicle to pass.

The Mississippi Mills Fire Department (MMFD) conducts fire safety inspections of properties on a request and complaint basis unless otherwise specified in the Fire Code.

The Ontario Fire Code specifies that owners are responsible for compliance with applicable requirements.  Compliance with the code may limit property damage when the necessary early detection and fire protection systems operate as designed.

MMFD is committed to working with owners when seeking compliance with the fire code.  Our desired outcome is compliance and fire and life safety.
