Highlights of the October 17th, 2023 Council Meeting
At last night’s meeting, Council presented Mississippi Mills local Isabel Lowry with a Certificate of Achievement. Isabel and her teammates represented Team Canada in the 2023 Olympic Hopes regatta in Poland this September, bringing home 2 gold medals for rowing in the C4 200 and 500 metres.
The Policy Planner position was discussed at the Committee of the Whole meeting on October 3rd. The report was accepted and will be included as part of the 2023 budget deliberations.
Council approved Option 2 of the Bylaw Service Review report presented by Fire Chief Williams. This option allows for an increase in the number of hours of coverage in Mississippi Mills, and the cost implications will be brought forward as part of the 2024 budget deliberations.
Council accepted a report from the CAO and the Director of Protective Services outlining some of the information requested from a Notice of Motion regarding the Community & Safety Well-Being and Policing plan brought forward by the Mayor earlier in the year. The report outlined some key stats from the municipality. Council directed staff to work on how best to share the information with residents and work on a public education campaign and community engagement. Council approved the reallocation of $50,000 of the advertising budget previously spent with Metroland Media to other advertising and communication initiatives. This could include alternate print, digital, and radio media.
Committee of the Whole also heard the following items, which will be brought forward for approval at a future Council meeting:
- The quarterly reports were received from Roads and Public Works as well as the Clerk’s Department
- A proposed amendment to the Traffic and Parking bylaw to narrow the winter parking restrictions from November 1st to April 15th annually to December 1st to March 31st.
Bicentennial Events:
- November 17-19, 24-26 – Spinning Yarns: The Millworkers’ Musical at Almonte Old Town Hall. This musical theatre production highlights textile mill workers. Written by Fern Martin, directed by Kris Riendeau, and produced by Barb Dickson and Michael Rikley-Lancaster.
