Council Proclaims June as Pride Month

Mississippi Mills Council has proclaimed the month of June as Pride Month in the Municipality of Mississippi Mills.

The proclamation was made during the May 21, 2024 Council meeting.

The full proclamation is as follows:

WHEREAS the Municipality of Mississippi Mills supports the rights of every citizen to experience equality and freedom from discrimination;

AND WHEREAS all people regardless of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, genetic characteristics, or disability have the right to be treated based on their intrinsic value as human beings;

AND WHEREAS the Municipality of Mississippi Mills accepts and welcomes people of diverse backgrounds and believes a diverse population leads to a more vibrant community;

AND WHEREAS the Two-Spirited, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersexual, Asexual and + (2SLGBTQIA+) communities contribute to the cultural, civic, and economic successes of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills;

AND WHEREAS while our society is slowly embracing new definitions of sexuality and gender, we must also acknowledge that the need for education and awareness remains vital to end discrimination and prejudice;

AND WHEREAS to acknowledge the efforts to bring awareness to the continuing evolution of the 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride movement, the Municipality of Mississippi Mills will display the Mississippi Mills Pride Banner in the Atrium at the municipal office for the month of June, and light up Almonte Old Town Hall and the falls on various days throughout the month.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the municipality of Mississippi Mills do hereby proclaim June 2024 as “June is PRIDE Month” in Mississippi Mills, and encourage our residents to reflect on the ongoing struggle for equality that members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community face and to celebrate their contributions that enhance our municipality.
