Downtown Almonte Beautification Efforts

The Mississippi Mills Roads and Public Works Department is collaborating with several partners on beautification efforts in Downtown Almonte.

As part of the contract for the renewal of the Downtown Core, Thomas Cavanagh Construction Limited and their subcontractor, Exact Landscapes Inc., are responsible for maintaining the garden beds for a two-year period post-completion. The Municipality is contractually obligated to use their services for the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

Unfortunately, many of the plantings in these garden beds did not survive the winter. The Municipality is working with Lashley Landscape Architects, who designed the beds, and our contractors to find a solution. All parties are committed to taking the appropriate steps to ensure conditions are suitable for plant life before replanting.

Soil samples have been taken and are currently being analyzed to verify that the beds have the necessary characteristics and nutrients and to check for any harmful materials that may have affected the plants.

Ensuring the proper steps are taken is crucial, as most of the plantings in these beds are perennials that should return each year. We ask for your patience as we work towards ensuring the long-term stability of the plantings, which will provide attractive garden beds for years to come.

Additionally, some of the grasses that did survive, along with the hanging baskets and supporting beds supplied by Ramsay Creek, remain very attractive and continue to enhance the pleasant character of our downtown core.
