Mississippi Mills Under Restricted Fire Zone Order
As of June 9, 2023, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has included Mississippi Mills under a Restricted Fire Zone Order for the region. This means all burning permits within the Municipality are suspended until the RFZ is lifted.
What is a Restricted Fire Zone?
A Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ) is a specific area where the use of open fires, such as campfires or debris burning, is prohibited.
This is a temporary measure put in place by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry when the fire danger is extreme to prevent human-caused fires. The RFZ order could last a few days to weeks depending on conditions.
When declared, it is illegal to set a fire within the affected region. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to $25,000 and three months in jail, in addition to financial responsibility for costs incurred in fighting a forest fire caused by the illegal act.
You can still go camping, hiking and fishing and enjoy the outdoors, but heat is needed for cooking and warmth, such as a portable gas or propane stove.
